Commissioners learn about county health tallies

ALBANY — There were 74 births and 95 deaths in Linn County in May, Health Officer Dr. Adam Brady told Commissioners Roger Nyquist and Will Tucker Tuesday morning.
Commissioner Sherrie Sprenger was not present.
Dr. Brady said there were 40 females and 34 males born.
Of the deaths, 42 were female and 53 were male. Of those, almost 18% could be related in some way to tobacco use, 6% to alcohol use, almost 14% to diabetes and 4% to drug use.
At least one person who died was more than 100 years old.
There was one suicide.
Dr. Brady said the number of sexually transmitted chlamydia cases, 25, is less than the monthly average of 30.
The number of animal bites year-to-date, 144, is also down a bit from the previous year-to-date number of 156.
In other business the commissioners:
• Announced the 4-H and Extension District 2023-2024 budget adoption is scheduled for 9:15 a.m. on Tuesday, June 27, prior to the regular meeting of the Board of Commissioners. Adoption of the 2023-2024 county budget is set for 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 29. Both meetings will be in the Board Room on the second floor of the Courthouse.
• Approved moving $25,000 from contingency into the Wildfire Recovery Fund. A portion will be used to close out at least one home replacement from the September 2020 wildfires in the Santiam Canyon.
• Learned from Environmental Health Director Shane Sanderson that his staff inspected 44 food service facilities in May and some 506 for the year, compared to 326 inspections the previous year.
• Approved a contract with Casa Latino Unidos not to exceed $308,167 in pass-through funding from the Oregon Health Authority to increase bilingual and bicultural health navigation and education programs in the community.
• Approved a contract amendment with Protocall Services Inc. to provide up to 300 crisis line phone calls per month for $8,775. If calls exceed 300 per month, the additional rate will be $31.75 per call.
• Approved amendments to language in the $1.54 million Coronovirus State Fiscal Recovery Fund Grant agreement. Sheriff Michelle Duncan said the funds were part of the fire radio improvement project.
• Approved increasing the Justice of the Peace budget by $20,000 to cover payments to Oregon Department of Revenue.
• Approved removing the classification “vocational counselor” from the policy manual. Administrative Officer Darrin Lane said no one has held that position since 2009. He also said he is working on removing several other outdated positions.
• Approved a refund of $1,667.50 for Jennifer Smothers from the Planning & Building Department.
• Moved the Fair & Expo Center report to July.
